A comprehensive ship weather routing system using CMEMS products and A* algorithm

We describe the implementation of a comprehensive software for Ship Weather Routing referred to as SIMROUTE. The A* pathfinding algorithm is used optimize sailing route function wave action. aim provide comprehensive, open and easy tool including pre- post-processing ship weather routing simulations. constructed considering Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) predictions systems which are available free use. code provides optimized minimum distance together with additional modules compute emission safety on navigation monitoring. SIMROUTE has been tested in several cases using different CMEMS products over short long distances. structure enables it be easily modified include resistance models effect water currents winds navigation. also academic purposes, providing skills optimization framework standards training, certification watchkeeping (STCW) competence-based maritime education training. Due simplicity its use, good candidate benchmarking strategies inter-comparison exercises advanced methods routing. This contribution highlights technical aspects, organization behind SIMROUTE, demonstrating capabilities through examples optimization.
